HISTORY

The Dartmoor Livestock Protection Society (DLPS) was formed after the severe winter of 1962-63 to help ponies, sheep and cattle in distress on Dartmoor and to campaign to raise standards of animal care.

DLPS volunteers respond to calls from the public about sick or injured animals and casualties from road traffic accidents. We require callers to give information about the animal's location and identification marks. We may ask for a vet to attend as well.

DLPS PAYS FOR INITIAL VETERINARY TREATMENT REGARDLESS OF WHO OWNS THE ANIMAL.

DLPS members attend annual pony drifts and sales to monitor the handling and bodily condition of the ponies.

DLPS campaigns to promote the welfare of livestock on the moor and much of its funds are spent helping the animals because DLPS is run by volunteers.

DLPS is involved in consultations on many problems such as the widespread growth of bracken and scrub and the increase in tick-borne disease; also on equine passports, micro-chipping and lorry transportation of unhandled moorland foals.

DLPS works closely with moorland farmers.

DLPS is associated with:

Emergency help cards are available giving phone numbers of DLPS volunteers and of local vets.
The cards are for walkers, riders and road users to keep to hand.
